Eyelash Extension Refill Aftercare: First 48-Hour Rules

The biggest rule after an eyelash extension refill is simple: keep your lashes dry and calm for 24 to 48 hours. That means no water, steam, sweaty workouts, rubbing, or oil around the lash line while the adhesive fully sets. We hear it all the time in our Allston studio: people love how “they last 3 weeks, ” and the first two days are a huge part of that.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after a lash extension refill (do this, skip that)
A refill appointment is all about replacing what your natural lash cycle shed, removing anything outgrown or twisted, cleaning the remaining lashes, and filling the gaps so everything blends again. Our refill service is 90 minutes, and those first 24 to 48 hours protect the work we just did.
48-hour non-negotiables: No water on your lashes, no steam, no sauna, and no heavy sweating. If you have to rinse your face, keep the lash line out of the splash zone and pat your skin dry.
Showering, commuting, and Allston humidity
If you’re in Allston in the summer, you already know the humid air can turn a quick walk into a sweat. Try to plan your refill for a time when you can stay dry afterward. Keep showers lukewarm, face away from the spray, and skip steamy bathrooms for the first two days. And if you’re coming from Cambridge, Brookline, or downtown Boston on the T, bring a clean blotting paper or tissue so you can dab sweat on your forehead without touching your lashes.
Makeup rules that save your retention
- Skip waterproof mascara. It’s hard to remove without rubbing or oily remover.
- No lash curler. It can snap extensions or crimp your natural lashes.
- Avoid oil-based removers, cleansing balms, and heavy eye creams right on the lash line.
If you want the bigger picture on styles and timing, take a look at what to expect from your first eyelash extension refill.
The first week: keep them fluffy, stop the “tiny bad habits”
Once you’re past the first 48 hours, you can get back to normal cleansing, workouts, and nights out. But the small stuff still matters. A lot of our regulars tell us their lashes look “10/10” and last weeks, and it’s usually because they don’t mess with them day to day.
Sweat, concerts, and outdoor events
Allston gets busy with outdoor events, summer patios, and those post-concert nights where you crash without thinking. If you sweat, cleanse your lash line gently once you’re past the first 48 hours. Salt and grime sitting at the base can make lashes feel itchy, and that’s when people start rubbing without realizing it.
Hands off, even if one looks “off”
Don’t pick, twist, or pull at extensions. If one is flipped or feels pokey, it’s usually an outgrown lash that needs a quick fix. Let us know and we’ll tell you the best next step. Trying to “repair” it at home is how natural lashes get stressed.
Oil-free cleansing + a clean spoolie: the routine that keeps a refill looking fresh
After your refill, we want your lashes clean, brushed, and left alone. Clean lashes hold better. They also feel better.
Simple daily steps (no fancy products required)
- Clean with an oil-free cleanser and use your fingertips gently. Pat dry. No rubbing at the lash line.
- Brush once a day with a clean spoolie, especially after sleeping. A light comb keeps the set looking even.
- Sleep with less friction. Face-up is best. A silk or satin pillowcase helps if you’re a side sleeper.
And if you’re a mascara person, this is the good news: with a refill, most people don’t need mascara at all. That’s the whole point of maintaining the fullness so your eyes stay defined without extra product.
Refills every 2 to 3 weeks: how to time it around classes, games, and real life
We recommend booking your next lash extension refill every 2 to 3 weeks. That lines up with your natural lash cycle and keeps the set looking full without waiting until it’s patchy. If you go longer than 3 weeks, there’s often too much loss for an effective refill and you may need a new full set instead.
A lot of our Allston clients plan refills around busy weeks. Students and young professionals near Packard’s Corner often pick evening or weekend appointments, especially when they’ve got a campus event, a Fenway game, or photos coming up. The goal is simple: keep your lashes looking like you just left the studio.
If you want to compare lash options, our lash services in Allston breaks down classic, hybrid, volume, and refills in plain English.
If something feels off, tell us early (we actually check in)
A refill should feel comfortable. Mild awareness the first day can happen, but poking, persistent irritation, or a section that suddenly sheds fast is your sign to reach out. Don’t pull at it and don’t try to remove anything yourself. We’d rather take a look, swap out a problem lash, and keep your natural lashes healthy under the extensions.
“Kylah always checks in to make sure that they’re feeling great in the few days following my appointment.”
one of our regulars
Quick reminder: If you think you’re due, don’t wait until your set is mostly gone. Regular refills are usually the most cost-effective way to keep a full look going.
